I believe the bird found a cozy spot to roost for the night. Lots of birds
use cavities, natural or otherwise, to spend the night away from the
elements and nocturnal predators. If the bird ( House Sparrow? Winter Wren?
something else?) liked the roost spot it will use it over and over again.
We routinely find Winter Wrens tucked into niches in our garage and house.
Bird boxes are also used heavily for roosting
