Just a reminder to everyone - bird watching at any location off public
roads (and both the long, bumpy "driveway" to the Lummi aquaculture dike
and the dike itself are considered to be "off public roads") requires a
permit from the Lummi Nation. Permits can be acquired Monday through
Friday at the Natural Resources Department at the Lummi Tribal offices
at 2616 Kwina Road.

Subject: [Tweeters] Lummi Flats Snow Bunting

My husband Bob and I hooked up with some old friends today and birded
Lummi
Flats in Whatcom County. We had one SNOW BUNTING on the dike, (thanks
to
Nick Page for finding them earlier this week.) The single bird was
right
past the first water spill, at the first turn-out, on the left. We were
able to get good looks at it for a couple of minutes from our car, but
when
we got out to take pictures it spooked and flew out across the bay. We
didn't see it again. While still out on the dike, we had a pair of
Long-tailed Ducks, one Horned Grebe, and a group of Brant near the
pilings
to the north.

Good numbers of raptors out on the flats today, (Hillaire Rd. area) with
Northern Harrier, Coopers Hawk, Red-tailed, and Rough-legged hawks. We
only
had one small group of swans, they were quite far out and we decided it
was
raining too hard to break out the scopes, so they remain swan sp. No
exciting sparrows, but we had one Western Meadowlark. We then headed up
to
Blaine for lunch, where we observed Western and Red-necked Grebe, Common
Loon, Surf and White-winged Scoters, and Marbled Murrelet from the
restaurant. A fun day despite the nasty weather!

Thanks!
