Today I spent a few hours searching Moses Lake and Potholes Reservoir for
water birds. Potholes Reservoir was quite slow with the only birds of note
being two late Barn Swallows. Potholes State Park was better, with a single
Golden-crowned Sparrow and a fine immature Cooper's Hawk.
Moses Lake was very active with many waterfowl of the usual fall suspects,
several Common Loons, a good variety of grebes including red-necked, horned,
pied-billed, eared, and western. Only the Clark's eluded for a complete
group.
Many geese are now present with a few Cackling Geese among them including
two of the minima race. Dunlin and Least Sandpiper represented the Calidris,
while a pair of Greater Yellowlegs represented the Tringa. A single
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER was with a large group of Killdeer.
The best bird located was an adult WESTERN GULL that was observed for some
time as it bathed and preened with a large group of California and
Ring-billed Gulls. Also present in some numbers were Bonaparte's Gulls which
are becoming a standard fall and winter bird on Moses Lake.
