Last winter I picked up by hand a townsends vole at North Creek Park. Since
I did not have my camera on hand I decided to take the vole home for the
night to photograph and release the next day. As I was carrying it by the
tail back to my car it gave off an audible high note which was sustained for
the better part of a minute. A Harrier came up behind me and made a very
close pass to my arm holding the vole. It then made a bank turn and came at
me again. I quickly stuffed the vole into my pocket, hoping the rodent would
not choose to gnaw its way out. So Voles can sing also, and singing voles
brings diners.
