Subject: [Tweeters] Cooper's Hawk - Short-eared Owl interaction+

Tweeters,
I have seen something similar several times in the last month or so: a
Cooper's Hawk (adult female) calling/scolding continuously in a wooded
area at the base of my garden, until I had to investigate. The hawk was
flying among several perches while calling (I heard her message as
"scram!") and on a tree in the middle was a great horned owl. The time
of day was late afternoon, and it seemed likely to me that the owl had
just flown in from its day roost, and the hawk was informing it that
she was already hunting here. The owl paid no attention to her, I left
(not wanting to disturb either one of them) and eventually the yelling
stopped. I heard and saw this twice again in the space of about three
weeks. I see both species fairly frequently, and I thought this
interaction was probably pretty standard when two of them want to
occupy the same area.
Happy Birding.
Alice
