On Saturday afternoon (11/13/05), Harold & Karen
Cottet, Cindy McCormack and I arrived at the nearly
mythical Ocean Shores STP. As soon as I joined the
birder contingent along the chain link, perimeter
fence, Nancy LaFromboise and Ruth Sullivan had me peer
into a scope that allowed me to see the vaunted
TEMMINCK'S STINT. Due to the Sullivans expert help
tracking the stint and helping others to get on the
bird, everyone present beheld wonderful view of this
remarkable rarity.

After the shorebirds flew out of the pond, our party
birded the jetty. A mixed flock of BLACK TURNSTONEs,
SURFBIRDs, and at least 3 ROCK SANDPIPERs afforded us
good views. While BLACK, WHITE-WINGED, and SURF
SCOTERs bobbed around in the brine, a female
LONG-TAILED DUCK cruised by us.

On Sunday morning, we revisited the stint and chatted
with many of the wonderful birders who help make
chasing rarities much more than simply ticking off
species on a checklist.

Later in the marina, there was a nice RED-THROATED
LOON and a COMMON LOON. As the wind picked up, more
birds began to take shelter on the golf course. Flocks
of Dunlin came in as well as 7-WHITE-FRONTED GEESE
flew in to join the CANADA GEESE, CACKLING GOOSE, and
a half dozen stately DUSKY CANADA GEESE.

It was great trip, and I hope that many others will
enjoy a similar experience.
