Hi All,

If the YardBirdRace gets much more exciting I?m going to need heart meds! Following these close races is getting my pulserate going higher than even at Jazzercise Class!

Not knowing where to start, how about with ROB CONWAY who is set to make a new KingCo and Class G (adjoining Greenbelt) YBR record already at 88 from NewCastle with birds like Calliope & Black Chinned Hummingbirds, Black Swift, Golden Eagle, nesting Ravens, Cassin?s Vireo and many more. 88 is a magic number as it is also the current total for RUTH & PATRICK SULLIVAN of Temminck?s Stint, et al, fame who are in the process of setting a YBR record in Pierce County with Calliope, Least Flycatcher, & Solitary Sandpiper.

Meanwhile in Class R KingCo, GUY MCWETHY w/ 2 owls & 2 vireos is a tantalizing 1 species short of tying the record of 71 with over a month to go.

Meanwhile, the speedsters-on-saltwater in Class W are in an unbelieveably close scramble at the top with DIANE MULHOLLAND of Port Hadlock, CAROLYN EAGAN of Port Ludlow, MAXINE REID of Tulalip Bay and ERIC & LAURA KRAIG of Nisqually Reach all clustered fairly close together and all very close or at the century mark-- and with the possibility of late entries always hovering to make the suspense even worse! This race is way to close to call a favorite and will only get more exciting as the year winds to a close.

In fact, YardBirdRace looks like it?s only going to get more exciting through the rest of 2005 and about when the SEAHAWKS excitement dies down in early January (I?m betting hell isn?t freezing over this year), it will get even more exciting as the 3rd annual race breaks out of the gate,

But regardless, a White Throated Sparrow put JEANNE MARRAZZO & JO HOFFMAN at 55 for Seattle Class R, a record pace and a comfortable lead, but will there be late entries? SHARON BAKER is tied for the YBR class W Seattle record with 60, and a month plus left to set a new record.

In more settled races (barring late entries!) BOBBY & CURT PEARSON are leading in Hillman City, DON MCVAY is ahead in North Queen Anne lead, TODD HASS is owning Capitol Hill, PATRICIA LOTT is leading in Greenwood & REBECCA GALLOWAY in Licton Springs. BECKY HERB tops West Seattle Class R and is in 1st runnerup position in Class R Seattle with 51.

Further afield, BRIAN PENDLETON, working out of an office with no auditory capability, still holds the lead in gigantic Bellevue with 46, & HUGH JENNINGS in hot pursuit. NANCY LANDER & BOB BENNETT have a great runnerup score in Renton, while somehow ROB SANDELIN seems to be sitting pretty in Maltby with 42, & LIZ & BROOK TAYLER lead Class R Snohomish with 51 including a Sandhill Crane. DAWN BAILEY is looking to repeat in Eatonville with 54 including White Pelican and Pygmy Owl, & GRACE OLIVER is well situated to repeat in Redmond with 49.

This would be a great time for anyone with a 2005 year yard list to enter, as a third press release is going out soon. Lists don?t need to be long to be entered: Remember, it?s a good birder who doesn?t see what isn?t there!

PRIZES for being in the top 30 include your choice of a one year sub to WASHINGTON BIRDER, a VIOLET GREEN SWALLOW NEST BOX from Canada that works well, a membership in BIRDLIFE INTERNATIONAL, a membership in your local AUDUBON SOCIETY and hopefully a small number of Kaufman Bird guides, which make great gifts.
