This is Wayne Weber with the Vancouver Natural History Society's
Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, November 17, 2005, sponsored in part by
the Wild Birds Unlimited stores in Vancouver and North Vancouver.
This update was recorded at 9 AM on November 18. The RBA phone
number is 604-737-3074.

The TEMMINCK'S STINT at Ocean Shores, WA was last reported on
November 15 and has probably left. Locally, the BAR-TAILED GODWIT
was last reported on November 13 and the KING EIDER on November
12, but both birds could still be in the area.


Sightings for Thursday, November 17

At Lighthouse Marine Park in Point Roberts, WA, 4 ANCIENT MURRELETS
were seen close two shore, as well as 3 PIGEON GUILLEMOTS and about
20 COMMON MURRES.

Two SNOWY OWLS were seen on the south jetty at Iona Island in Richmond,
And one SNOWY OWL was present for most of the day near the tip of the
Tsawwassen ferry jetty in Delta.

Sightings at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta included one each of BARN
OWL, LONG-EARED OWL, and NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL.

Birds seen in and near various potato fields in Delta included several
LAPLAND LONGSPURS, a BARN OWL, 4 MOURNING DOVES, 2
NORTHERN SHRIKES, and several ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS.


Sightings for Wednesday, November 16

Three SNOWY OWLS, the first of the fall, were seen on the Iona Island
south jetty in Richmond.

An adult HARRIS'S SPARROW, the first one reported this fall, was seen in
a yard in the 4100 block of Lancelot Drive in Richmond.

At the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta, sightings included a GOLDEN
EAGLE, an AMERICAN BITTERN, 3 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS
(including 1 adult and 2 immatures), 2 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE,
and a SWAMP SPARROW.


Sightings for Tuesday, November 15

The TEMMINCK'S STINT at Ocean Shores, Washington was last seen, but at
the Oyhut Wildlife Area, not at the sewage treatment plant where it had been
seen regularly for a week.

A WILLET was seen at Brunswick Point in Delta, flying east up Canoe Pass
along River Road.


Sightings for Monday, November 14

The TEMMINCK'S STINT, first found on November 9, was seen by
many observers for the 6th consecutive day at the Ocean Shores
sewage plant in Ocean Shores, WA.

At the Reifel Bird Sanctuary, a EURASIAN race GREEN-WINGED TEAL was
seen near the viewing tower.


Sightings for Sunday, November 13

At Blackie Spit in Surrey, the BAR-TAILED GODWIT was seen with 4
MARBLED GODWITS by several observers. Check the east side of the spit
at high tide for this bird. Also here were a flock of 50 LONG-BILLED
DOWITCHERS, and at least 2 EURASIAN WIGEON.

At Lighthouse Marine Park in Point Roberts, Washington, a ROCK
SANDPIPER was seen again with BLACK TURNSTONES. Offshore,
6 COMMON MURRES and 2 PIGEON GUILLEMOTS were seen

At the mouth of the Serpentine River in Surrey, accessed from Mud Bay Park
just off Colebrook Road, an AMERICAN AVOCET, probably the same
bird seen last winter, was reported.

At the Tsawwassen ferry jetty in Delta, a HORNED LARK was seen
along the road on the south side of the jetty.

An EARED GREBE was seen in English Bay off Jericho Park in Vancouver.

A NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was seen at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary.


Sightings for Saturday, November 12

The second-winter male KING EIDER was found for the first time in 6 days
off Siwash Rock in Vancouver's Stanley Park. If you cannot find the eider
there, look among large flocks of SURF SCOTERS along the shoreline
of English Bay in Vancouver or West Vancouver, where it has been
since October 30th.

At Blackie Spit in Surrey, a BAR-TAILED GODWIT was seen with 2 MARBLED
GODWITS. Also there was a SNOW BUNTING on the spit.

At Point Roberts, Washington, a ROCK SANDPIPER was seen again at Lighthouse
Marine Park.

In Port Moody, a SPOTTED SANDPIPER was seen on the shoreline
near Alderside Road.

A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was seen in the 11600 block of
95th Avenue in North Delta.


Sightings for Friday, November 11

The BAR-TAILED GODWIT was seen and photographed by several
observers at Blackie Spit in Surrey with up to 4 MARBLED GODWITS.
Also there was a EURASIAN WIGEON.

In Port Moody, a late female WILSON'S WARBLER was seen in the 700
block of Alderside Road. Nearby, a drake LONG-TAILED DUCK was seen offshore.

An EARED GREBE was seen off Third Beach in Stanley Park, Vancouver.

At the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta, a blue-phase SNOW GOOSE was
reported.

In Richmond, an ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD appeared in a yard in the 8500
block of Citation Drive.

An AMERICAN DIPPER was seen along the shoreline at West Bay
along Radcliffe Avenue in West Vancouver. Also in West Vancouver,
7 BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS were on the Grebe Islets off Lighthouse
Park.

At the Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver, a TOWNSEND'S
SOLITAIRE was reported.


There were no sightings reported for Thursday, November 10, 2005
