Jerry and I longed to escape the fog, so we went up to Pack Forest yesterday
about noon.
(see article about:

We climbed up to Hugo Peak which is only about 2,000 ft above sea level, but it
was above the fog and we were in sunshine for most of the hike up. AT the top,
you really don't get a very good view of the countryside, as the trees have grown
up since the last cut - you do get a peak-a -boo view of the olympics .

WE sat and had our lunch when J. noticed a tiny owl watching us right above our
heads about 15 - 20 at the most - feet up on a branch. He was out enjoying the
sunshine, too , eyes wide open and looking around. It was definitely a Northern
Pygmy ,about 7 inches with a long tail. Completely out in the open.

He stayed while another couple hiked in the clearing and talked and walked
around and took photos etc. Very cooperative.

Other birds seen - several Varied Thrush, golden crowned and ruby crowned
kinglets, chickadees, crows, juncos.
