In regards to the swan Ruth and Patrick Sullivan show in their photos; I saw
this same bird two weeks ago standing in water in the tidal ponds between
Marine View Dr and the bay...the legs unfortunately were submerged in the
incoming tide so I couldn't tell if they were black or lighter as pictured
in the Sibley guide for a dark juvenile of either Tundra or Trumpeter. I
thought it had a small dark area at the base of the bill, but I also saw the
eye was very definately separated from the base of the bill by light
feathers as in the Sibley Trumpeter.

I gave it up as too close for me to call, and my long-lensed camera is
broken and needs replacing. Sigh.
