I spent a portion of the Thanksgiving Holiday birding, starting on thurdsay at Skagit Wildlife Area - Big Ditch, where the weather was quite cold and the wind was bitter. Friday I birded a little at Luhr beach in the pouring rain, and today I visited the Ridgefield NWR and Luhr beach and the weather was nice. Highlights of the trip included:
Sandhill Crane - 11 of them at Ridgefield NWR - the River "S" Unit
Snowy Owl - Luhr Beach
American Bittern - one at Big Ditch
Red-throated Loon - one at Luhr beach
American Kestrel - one on Pioneer Hwy at the entrance to Big Ditch and a second on on Thomle Road south of Stanwood
Northern Shrike - Big Ditch
Virgina Rail - heard only at Big Ditch
Rough-legged Hawk - a dark phase bird at Big Ditch
Great Egret - Observed the two at Big Ditch, and many at Ridgefield
Cheers and Good Birding
