Dear Tweeters,

Howard Armstrong and I got good looks at the
Clay-colored Sparrow at Freeland (Island County)
today. The bird gave a short but good look when it
perched up on a sapling, enjoying the first rays of
morning sun. This was in the pampas grass-blackberry
hedge by the seaside, to the right of the bathroom.
Later, this bird and the Zonotrichias and Song
Sparrows with it moved to the sparse little manicured
hedge that runs between the front parking lot and a
little drainage ditch. A Sharp-shinned Hawk perched
nearby, giving us a hard time, with the sparrows
hiding for a time. We also saw a Sanderling there, and
at San de Fuca were 150 Black Turnstones and 7
Surfbirds, with three Audubon's Warblers in a nearby
apple tree.

At North Fork Access on Fir Island, we found one Snowy
Owl. This bird was seen by walking to the left and
continuing on until the sings for gun club property;
from there, we looked toward Jensen Access.

Just east of Jensen Access were six American Pipits.
At Hayton Preserve were close to 10,000 Snow Geese,
with a Cackling Goose or two.

Good birding!

Yours truly,

Gary Bletsch
