Well, after my earlier post on the Montlake Fill, I saw the post about the Snowy Owl in Discovery Park and immediately logged out at the Online Cafe on Capital Hill and headed over. Glad I did, because I picked up some good birds.

I did get the Snowy Owl, and I got there before anyone else showed up. I showed two women and their young children, and then since I almost never bird the south end of the park, and because I was jacked up about a life bird, I started out. Got a California Quail, a singing Varied Thrush, a few Steller's Jays and a Red-tailed Hawk. I circled back around, saw that there were now some 6 people looking at the Snowy Owl, and more folks coming with scopes and was glad I saw it when I did - definitely don't enjoy the crowds.

Anyway, I then went to the North Parking Lot at Discovery and took a very long walk down to the beach. I picked up Greater Scaup, Common and Barrow's Goldeneye, Red-breasted Merganser and Surf Scoter, and then saw my first White-winged Scoters! Two lifers in one day! After also adding Herring Gull, Pine Siskin, Fox Sparrow and Red-breasted Nuthatch, I decided to call it a day and head back to the car. Species #67 on the day was a lovely pair of Bald Eagles! Can't get much better than that! A great day for birding in the city!
