On Saturday, 11/16, Netta Smith saw 6-8 White-tailed Ptarmigans (pure
white, of course, and very hard to see until they moved) a few
hundred yards below the Paradise Inn at Mount Rainier National Park.
There's a parking lot at Paradise, and a road leads out of it to the
east downhill. Where it crosses a stream, directly below the lodge,
she came across a small flock that were working their way uphill
toward the lodge, probably to roost, as it was 4:15 pm and getting
dark. They were feeding on buds of heather shrubs. You can probably
only get there with cross-country skis or snowshoes, as the snow
along the road is too deep and soft to walk on.
