saturday, bob heirman's wildlife preserve: on shadow lake, we found about
150 trumpeter and tundra swans mixed, right where ned left them. the
majority were trumpeter, with perhaps 750 mallards and domestic hybrids,
30-40 canada geese, a few american coots and american wigeons, three or four
parasailers, two adult bald eagles (watching the proceedings from two tall
evergreens west of the lake), and a very few ring-necked ducks... photos
are mostly of the trumpeters, mostly in flight, mostly at more than 100
metres... a few times, they flew by close enough to get decent shots, but
even attempting to walk on water (which we are eminently unqualified, as we
proved in the marsh more than once), we were unable to sneak closer...

saturday, northwest wildfowl: thank you to lynn dye for allowing us to
photograph the resident eiders (king and common) and much of the rest of the
menagerie (including white-faced whistling ducks, long-tailed ducks and
northern pintails)...

sunday, discovery park: matt bartels left a message on tweeters, said
"SNOWY OWL" far too early in the morning to have been understood... a few
hours later, maryfrances mathis said much the same thing, but by then my
neurons were almost awake. i must have missed ned mcgarry by mere minutes
due to my following maryfrances' loop around the neighbourhood (without
knowing i was following her lead :)... folks, if you missed this bird, you
might want to try again tomorrow. the owl didn't do much moving most of the
day, standing on the entry gable of a naval home at fort lawton not far
north and west from the south parking lot and the infamous meadow.
unfortunately, as close as we could get with permission was about 30 metres
or so (private property)... one of the residents was amused by the
spectacle, said there had been 20 folk out about an hour before i showed,
with scopes and binocs aplenty. we wondered aloud why homeland security
wasn't in evidence, but were thankful they apparently had better things to
do. come sunset, s/he decided to fly to the top of the home, thus affording
better views until the sun went down 5 minutes later, at which time s/he
flew to the top of a nearby evergreen (where we left our visitor to hunt for
dinner in peace)...

photos of each adventure are on the website: photos of the month gallery...
the snowy owl shots are heavily-cropped for distance and clarity... hope
you can get out and see this cutie :)
