I would be in agreement here. I have not only had a number of Golden-crowns (GCKI) in the hand, I have also had GCKI come to within 3 feet of my face when I was pishing, with the orange very evident in agitated males (remember, pishing is similar to a mild-to-high-alarm call, depending on how well you do it). Anyway, nice that you got such nice looks Kevin. They are truly beautiful little birds. If you'd like to read more about them, there is some fascinating discussion in a book by Bernd Heinrich called Winter World: The Ingenuity of Animal Survival. A few chapters go into great detail on the physiology of the kinglets that allow them to overwinter in the boreal forest of Canada, where days are only 8 hours long and temperatures often plummet to 20 below zero. And Dr. Heinrich is an excellent writer, very easy to read. Cheers!

Orange-feathers in the crown indicate that you saw a male
(an agitated male actually). Since most of us only get views
from a distance or when the birds are way up in a tree,
the bright orange crowns are not always noticed.

I've caught quite a few in mist-nets; in-hand, close-up
the male's crown very orange....

Today on San Juan Island, among a mixed flock of
kinglets, chickadees, etc., I saw a Golden-Crowned
Kinglet whose crown was distinctly orange instead of
yellow. It was a very vibrant orange; I had never
seen that before.
