John and Ellie Friars called me to tell me they had a Lewis' Woodpecker at their place on Vashon Island. Visitors are welcome. From the Vashon ferry dock head south on the highway through "town" on to 204th street, the third four-way stop. The restaurant Sound Foods is on your left. Turn left onto 204th go down the hill and when reaching the water turn left onto Chautauqua Beach Road. (You can also stop and check out the wigeon flock and other docks at this spot.) Continue through the next four-way stop and follow the road around a curve to 77th appearing on the left and go to the last house on the right on 77th.

This is the first sighting on Vashon I know of since the mention of Lewis' Woodpeckers in the old Larrison book, Field Guide to the Birds of Puget Sound, from the 1950's.
