Penny Koyama and I spent most of the day birding in the Skagit and
Stanwood areas, and, despite the bad weather, did manage to see a few
birds. We neither saw nor heard the NORTHERN WATRTHRUSH at the Skagit
Game Range (after sinking to the ankles in the mud, we decided against
walking from the dike to the slough), but had better luck at Port Susan
Bay. There, we saw the two SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPERS reported by Gene
Hunn, but best of all were the 20 or so SNOW GEESE that flew in, our
first of the season. We also watched a MERLIN chasing a GREAT BLUE
HERON; now THAT'S attitude.

A reminder: duck-hunting season starts this weekend.
