The Sultan River every odd year hosts a large run of Pink Salmon, and by
this time of the year, most of the fish are dead. Thousands of dead fish
line the shore. I was herding my third grade nature explorers at Osprey Park
this morning and there was an interesting division on the river bar between
Ravens and Crows. There were about 40 crows feeding in a loose group,
covering maybe 35 feet of the river bar in length. There was a empty space
of about 25 feet, and then there was a group of 11 Ravens in a loose
formation. Plenty of dead fish to go around, or so I thought. At one point a
Raven walked into the empty space between the two groups and every single
crow starting cawing. The Raven hopped back to where it was, all was quiet
on the western front. Later a crow flew into the air and tried to go
upstream which was over the Ravens turf. 4 Ravens took off, lots of
vocalizations and chased the crow, which reversed direction and headed
downstream. The Ravens flew back to their original position, and did not
follow the crow into what I thought of as the crow territory. The rain
started falling and the kids were tired of the dead fish smell so we
departed. Just as we were entering the woods, a huge ruckous came from the
bar and I saw 6-7 gulls flying overhead. I really wanted to stay and watch
the show and see how the boundaries changed with the addition of the gray
and white team.
