Here's the regulation, from this year's rule book:

"Anyone hunting upland birds (pheasant, quail, and partridge), rabbits, or hares with a modern firearm during any upland game bird season is required to wear hunter orange clothing. Those hunting forest grouse, rabbits, or hares during modern firearm deer or elk hunting seasons must also wear hunter orange clothing. A minimum of 400 square inches of fluorescent hunter orange exterior clothing, worn above the waist and visible from all sides, is required to comply with this regulation."

So, sounds like if you're not hunting, you don't have to be wearing hunter orange. Of course, for safety's sake, it's a good idea to make your presence known to the hunters. I've got a hunter orange sweatshirt that I picked up at Freddy's that I try to wear when I'm out in the woods this time of year. Warm, and stylish too!

Subject: [Tweeters] question re: wearing orange in hunt areas

Dear Tweeters,

A fellow birder told me he'd been accosted by a hunter
at Fir Island Game Range (WMA). The hunter told the
birder that everybody in the area has to wear a
certain number of square inches of optic orange
clothing, whether or not the person be hunting. The
hunter warned the birder that the refuge manager might
kick a birder out of there if the birder wasn't decked
out like an oriole.

Do any Tweeters know the regs on this?

Yours truly,

Gary Bletsch
