Our team of volunteer hawkbanders ended a 50 day study of the fall hawk migration in the Cascade Mountains above Leavenworth, WA, yesterday. They set a new record at Entiat of 349 hawks captured, banded and released including 208 Sharp-shinned Hawks, 70 Cooper's Hawks, 7 Northern Goshawks, 12 American Kestrels, 27 Merlins, 6 Prairie Falcons, 1 Peregrine Falcon, 14 Red-tailed Hawks, 3 Northern Harriers and a single Golden Eagle.
The highlight of the season was the capture of an adult male Richardson's Merlin, a very rare subspecies in the Cascades. Merlins are showing up in record high numbers at several banding stations in the Pacific Northwest this year.
