I recently bought a hawk call from Acorn Naturalists. When I tried it out at
home, it did not sound anything like a red-tail hawk so I was pretty
disappointed. I took it with me today in the field. After the students had
gone home, and as I was leaving I saw a red-tail perched a good 100 yards
away. I blew the call and immediately the bird flew up and directly
overhead, it called 5-6 times as it covered the distance between us. I was
surprised and since the hawk was already overhead I blew the call again.
This time the hawk circled overhead and called, dropping lower and lower
over my head. I don't know what the hawk call says, but it sure got this
one going.
