Hi Tweeters,

Interesting stuff for me these past two weeks. This
afternoon was sad though, made an unsucessful attempt
to rescue a Pied-billed Grebe that had gotten wrapped
in some netting but was able to paddle around freely.
One of the Fisheries people was kind enough to help.
At least I'll sleep better knowing I didn't walk away.
It was in the Boat Street Marina.

Up to 5 Western Grebe around. Got to see one up close
fishing underwater. Their feet are far larger than I
expected and that was the main method of locomotion
under water, using the feet. That Grebe caught 2
small fish in a row.

The Mallards have a thing for the acorns. They race
to see who can get to the acorn that drops out of the
tree by South Campus Center. A small army of them
cross Boat Street on web foot to get to the the oak
trees up Brooklyn St. I wonder if the Scrub Jay is
picky about the acorns it wants. The trees here
definitely have some crop. I'll be looking for a
Scrubbie.

Other interesting sightings, Goldfinch foraging on the
ground and gulls plucking crayfish out of the lake.
Saw White-crowned Sparrows last week but none this
week.
