Subject: [Tweeters] Along the Water in So. Kitsap County

My AM musicale got cancelled and I said bleep housework and hit the road
w/my bins and scope. After reading of Ruth and Patrick Sullivan's trip
earlier in the week I decided to start at the Gorst Estuary and work my way
along the water thru Port Orchard and towards Manchester SP.

To bird the Gorst Estuary I parked near the Subaru dealership at an AC Delco
place. The guy in charge said he didn't mind if I went onto the property to
bird, but just to ask every time I wanted to bird there. Good to know for
future reference. The Subaru people were cool too. In fact, one guy
started picking my brain re scopes so I referred him to Anacortes Telescope.

Anyway, below is the list of birds I saw today, in taxillogical order (can't
find my field card to put 'em in order). I saw most of the species at the
estuary and just duplicated 'em as I drove Beach Dr./Rd. Most notable for
me were two WESTERN SCRUB JAYS near Rich Cove.

Double-crested Cormorant
Pelagic Cormorant
Red-breasted Merganser
Common Merganser
Hooded Merganser
Bufflehead
Green-winged Teal
Mallard
Northern Pintail
Surf Scoter
White-winged Scoter
Scaup sp.
Barrow's Goldeneye
juv. Harlequin Duck (towards Rich Cove)
Western Grebe
Pied-billed Grebe
Red-necked Grebe
Horned Grebe
American Wigeon
Eurasian Wigeon
juv. Black Turnstones (towards Rich Cove)
Yellowlegs
Accipiter sp
Bald Eagle
Eu. Starling
Western Scrub Jay
Steller's Jay
Song Sparrow
White-crowned Sparrow
House Finch
House Sparrow
Mourning Dove (Rich Cove)
Belted Kingfisher
Marsh Wren
Black-capped Chickadee
Chestnut-backed Chickadee
Red-winged Blackbird
Spotted Towhee
Am. Crow

A park and wildlife viewing area is going to be built at the Gorst Estuary
sometime soon. Will let y'all know once it's underway. This is going to be
a marvelous place to bird!

Something to note if you ever do a trip that'll take you thru Port Orchard:
there's a public restroom right across the street from City Hall in the
marina parking area!

Good birding,
Mary
