On Saturday, Oct. 21st, I led a field trip for the Columbia Land
Trust to the Carty Unit of the Ridgefield Refuge and a marvelous private
piece of property between the refuge and the Lewis River. At the Carty
Unit we were treated to an incoming flock of eleven TUNDRA SWANS that
passed low over our heads. My first of the fall ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was
also at the Carty Unit.
The private property we explored had numerous SANDHILL CRANES in
small flocks, two BALD EAGLES, a pair of very cooperative PILEATED
WOODPECKERS and wonderful undisturbed Columbia River bottomland habitat
with several oak balds that the owner is restoring by removing the
encroaching Douglas Firs.
