A couple of years ago, my Audubon chapter did a field trip called Birding by
Bus. We met at the Park'nRide at Mercer Slough, birded some there, then took
the bus up to Juanita Bay Park and spent the rest of the morning there. Had
to change buses in Bellevue, with just enough time to get a latte! It was a
great trip, everyone had a wonderful time. In between our birding stops,
there was lots of time to sit together in the back of the bus and visit and
talk about BIRDS! We even got Metro to sponsor us! Reply to me off list if

I suggested a "green birding year" last January, to reach 300 in Washington
on less than 200 gallons. I got to 300 with a Sharp-tailed Sandpiper a
couple of weeks ago and was well beneath my gas quota until the Prothonotary
Warbler alert, for which I reverted to my old profligate habits.

However, I would suggest we should minimize our gas consumption not because
of the price of gas (in dollars, that is) but because of the ecological and
other impacts of our profligate gas guzzling.

I hope to do better next year. Cut back to 100 gallons perhaps. I have found
that the two best ways to do so without just not birding are:

1) carpool or use public transport as often as possible;
2) focus on local birding hotspots; local parklists, yard lists, county
lists, rather than anything more ambitious, which is to say, find your own
rare birds.
