I second Gene's recommendation heartily. Pick a park you can walk or bike
to, pay attention to your neighborhood, look for micro hotspots. Rarity is
relative, after all; with a small attitude adjustment it can be just as
satisfying to find a bird that is unusual for its location or season as it
is to drive 600 miles to chase someone else's mega-rarity. And, in terms of
useful knowledge and conservation implications, ultimately more important,
too.
Oh, yeah, that Greater White-fronted Goose was still at Medina Park when I
took a walk through there yesterday afternoon.
