Subject: [Tweeters] DIRECTIONS: Juanita Bay & Vicinity

Hi Tweeters:
I had just sent the following msg about directions to Juanita Bay to a trip
leader and it exactly crossed paths with the Juanita Bay msg to Tweeters
about all the Wilson's Snipes (by Penny Koyama). Then Mary Frances Mathis
sent the msg to Tweets about exciting sparrows and even more snipe.
So I guess I should post these directions to Tweeters. Bear in mind they
are directions from south King County. I hope they make sense, and aren't
too mistake-ridden. Someone from Juanita Bay, please correct me if they are
wrong...
Yours, Carol Schulz

DIRECTIONS: TOTEM LAKE
Take I-405 north of Kirkland to exit 20B, NE 124th St. At the intersection
of 124th continue straight through, and also continue straight through
(across) Totem Lk Blvd. Take the first road to your right, I think it's
Totem Lk Way. It looks like it's going to office bldgs. You will see the
lake on your right. Park in the parking that is near the wetland. Walk the
boardwalk for views of marsh birds, waterfowl, and possibly accipiters. It
can be quite productive, in an urban-type area, especially in the mornings.

DIRECTIONS: JUANITA BAY (there is a small map on www.elwas.org)
>From the south, take I-405 north to exit 20A, NE 116th St. (This is a
little south of 124th above.) At the first light, turn left (west) on 116th
St. (To reach 116th from Totem Lake business area, cross over I-405 on
124th. Turn left (south) on 120th Ave. Turn rt (west on 116th St.) Travel
west on 116th St less than 2 miles to the bottom of the hill. Turn left
(south) on 98th Ave NE. Go about 1/4 mile on 98th. Turn right at the light
to park at JUANITA BAY PARK. There is a sanican, picnic benches and
parking. You will be looking north over Juanita Bay.
Before visiting the wetlands by the lake, walk back across 98th at the
light, and go past the Fire Station on Forbes Crk Dr. There is a gravel
road that goes left behind the fire stn. Go down this gravel road/ trail
area about 2 blocks. Good spot for wood peckers, and small birds, including
unusual sparrows. There are Virginia Rails in this area.
Back at Juanita Bay Park, the boardwalks are great. The boardwalk to the
left (west one) sometimes has Virginia Rails that can be seen. Look for
Beaver, and Muskrat. There are good camera ops throughout the park.
Take a scope, because as you walk north on the main trail/road, you can
sometimes see Wilson's (Common) Snipe on the lake shore on the north muddy
edges of the lake, very near the main trail and looking toward the condos.
There are often local people in the park that are very nice and informative
about wildlife and birds to be seen.

JUANITA BEACH PARK
North of Juanita Bay Park about 2 blocks is Juanita Beach Park. You can
drive around to it, or just walk north, and around some condos to get to it.
There is a large grass area, restrooms, and wonderful docks to walk out on.
You can view many of the deep-water ducks in the bay from those docks, and
frequently add to your birds list from that view point.
