Subject: [Tweeters] UW Birding-One Year Mark

Hi Tweeters,

Today I hit the one year mark for tracking my bird
sightings at work. It has been fun. I will
discontinue the (semi) regular reports as it turns out
I will not be able to spend as much time as I would
like out there. I'll still get to check it out, just
not as much. I will let you all know if cool stuff
like the Redhead ducks reappear. Several people were
able to visit this area for lifer Redheads last year.
And I know there are new birders on the list since
then.

This week the 5 Western Grebes are still hanging
around. There was an interesting crow/Cooper's hawk
interaction. First the crows were dive bombing the
hawk. Then the hawk, an immature and fiesty bird,
singled out a crow for a good harassment. It only
took two harassments from the hawk before it became
suddenly "invisible" to crows and they quit dive
bombing it. The immature hawk that was here last year
was clearly intimidated by the crows but not this one.

Of the very unexpected birds this year, Savannah
Sparrow I saw another one this week. Weird. The
other very unexpected bird was the Green Heron and I
saw one at least twice this year. The expected back
bird that I never saw return was the Red-breasted
Sapsucker. It spent a fair amount of time drilling
wells into a tree near the Montlake bridge and I never
saw it back or any new wells.

On a seperate email I will list out the 75 species I
saw this year. For this week, from Oct 24 til today.
