All this flicker talk reminds me of something that happened in Kansas in
1992. My husband was bicycling along the road when a car hit a flicker,
which fell into the ditch. My husband brought it home, and it stayed
with us for a day. We went took it for a car ride to his parents' house
30 miles away. It appeared to have bonded with my husband, because it
rode everywhere on his shoulder like a pirate's parrot, but it wouldn't
let anyone else touch it. The next day we called the university wild
bird rescue, but before they came, the flicker flew to our screen door
and fluttered around. We let it out, and it flew to a tree across the
street. It remained there for an hour, then finally flew off. We know
better now than to treat a wild bird like a pet, but we still have fond
memories of that flicker!
