This morning, I found a female Black Backed Woodpecker and a White Throated
Sparrow in Northwest Spokane County

To get to the woodpecker (seen two weeks in a row now), go west on Waikiki
road to the corner where it becomes Rutter Parkway (Spokane Fish Hatchery).
Turn left on the road to St George?s School. Go .4 mi and look for a white
pump house with a green roof on your right. You will notice a very ill
Douglas Fir about 100 feet in front of you right next to the road that the
woodpecker has been working over. Found the Black Backed Woodpecker this
morning foraging just east of the pump house. Also in the area: Downies,
Hairies, Flickers, and Pileated as well as an occasional Moose at the canoe
launch.

The White Throated Sparrow can be located by going northwest out of Spokane
on Highway 291 past the Nine Mile Dam and past Charles Road which takes you
over the Spokane River. About another ? quarter mile, turn left into this
section of Riverside State Park. Once in the park, take an immediate right
and go until you come to a wooden fence. At this point, there are two bushy
areas just to your right. The White Throated Sparrow was in these bushy
areas with Dark eyed Juncos.

Later in the day, Sprague Lake provided two nice male White Winged Scoters,
just off the first boat launch ramp you come to (from Sprague) in Lincoln
County.

Then to close out, at Reardan Ponds, there were two Trumpeter Swans in with
the many Tundra Swans and seven Snow Geese.

Blessings,

Terry Little
