Well, I was going to go fish the Skagit today and decided to go to the Fill instead. Then i got up and started doing chores and well....the burdens of homeownership just took over and I never got anywhere. As it turned out though I had a great birding day and I owe it all to a shift in my perspective.
After re-filling the suet and birdfeeder I watched the normal crew come and go while I re-organized the garage. Deciding to clean the gutters I got the ladder out and noticed the roof was a bit dirty so I drug the broom, hose and blower up on the roof and commenced with the cleaning. This took a good 3 hours and I was surprised by the world that was going on around me. The birds were everywhere and I must say this has me thinking of setting up a perch on my roof. Watching the flight path and choices the birds make upon arrival to the yard (or anywhere on the block for that matter) was very interesting and the angle was great for watching the Sharp-shinned and Coopers Hawks dance around the crows looking for a meal! Even the neighborhood Mitred Parakeets gave a few nice fly-by's today.
Now I do not want to be the one responsible for a rash of broken bones or worse here so I please take care when getting up on your roof. This time of year it is slippery and wet and can lead to serious injury (disclaimer). However if you are getting bored of your usual viewpoint and want to see things a little differently (or get credit from the wife for "cleaning" the roof) then drag out the ladder and a bair of bino's and see what is going on all around you!
