Hello Fellow Tweeters-
This morning I got out early for a walk through Wallace Swamp Creek Park
in Kenmore. For a cool , cloudy, damp morning the birds were quite
active. Ruby Crowned Kinglets seemed to be every where, Lots of Robins
too. My total was 20 species. This time of year I feel fortunate if I get
15. I got real good views of a young male Pileated Woodpecker. I walked
to the end of the trail that runs along the east side of the stream,
where the large stump is laying in the stream . There was a short snag on
the opposite shore hanging over a small pebble beach. That snag had been
well excavated by woodpeckers in the past. It broke in two recently
exposing new easily accessed Carpenter Ants. I watched for quite some
time as the Pileated pecked away at both the log now laying on the beach
and what remains of the snag. I'm sad to see that snag go though, this
spring it was a nest sight for Black Capped Chickadees and had been a
favorite perch for Belted Kingfishers.
