Took some students up to Wallace Falls State Park today. At the bridge over
the river we stopped and while I pontificated about geology, a couple
students attention wandered (imagine that) but their attention was rivetted
by an ouzel. The water was absolutely roaring downstream and this slim gray
bird, popped up out of the whirling foam several times, bobbed, then jumped
back in. We were all certain that bird must surely be washed downstream, but
up it would pop back on the same rock it started. How to they DO that? It
is perhaps the case, in many foaming whitewater scenarios, there is a lot of
air mixed in with the water and we speculated that the ouzel was targetting
a spot that had mostly air. It was certainly the wildest water I could
imagine this bird jumping into.

Later, at the upper falls viewpoint, a Great Blue Heron soared right below
the falls then landed on a tree next to the falls. One of the kids said it
perfectly...Tskk tourist.....
