Hi raven fans;

I dug out a small scribbled page of field notes from May 12, 1974. In it, I mentioned seeing a flock of 27 - 30 Ravens soaring over a ridge. That was in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps near Mittenwald.

In Germany, one sees flocks of corvids that usually turn out to be Rooks. But I still recall that sightiing of soaring Ravens. Up till then, I considered the raven as a rather rare bird in Germany.

The highlight of that day was a female White-backed Woodpecker! That species is a rare bird in Germany. I never met anyone else who saw one in Germany. But I got quite close, as it pecked away on a very large stump. They're kind of old growth dependent.
