> Though I have only seen it in films, they will feed on some varieties of mahonia, and (I am speculating) may go to Oregon grape that flowers in winter.

Several years ago I saw a couple of Anna's Hummingbirds feeding at Tall Oregon Grape (probably some cultivar of Mahonia aquifolium) blooming at the arboretum in Seattle on New Years Day in the snow. At the time, I'd only seen Anna's a couple of times, and I was thrilled. My parents, from Toronto, were pretty impressed too.
