though it was somewhat quiet at the montlake fill yesterday morning (union
bay nature area), one of the more unusual fill residents appeared long
enough for a poor photo: a ring-necked pheasant male, making his second
appearance in as many years for our group.

later, i decided to go for the buff-breasted sandpiper at marymoor park and,
while i whiffed on him, a few better photographs were taken. among those
were flowers (mostly dahlias) from the pea patch, and two shots of a
killdeer that had what looked like a large, oblong tumour growing from the
top of his right thigh, about the size of a walnut. if anyone would like
closer shots, please let me know.
