Pileated woodpeckers and flickers feed on fruit in fall and winter. (Maybe hairies and downies do too?) When I lived in Shoreline we had a pileated each fall feeding on the crabapples in our yard. I saw a pileated yesterday flying over Beacon Avenue on Beacon Hill. I imagine that in addition to fall dispersal by young of the year, adults move around in search of fruit, too.
I'm hoping a pileated finds my neighbor's apple tree!
