Sorry for the late post, but I fell into bed right after dinner last night
after a really long day.
Yesterday Steve Mlodinow, Bob Flores, John Walsh (forgive me if the last
name is incorrect), Barb, and myself spent a very long day birding
Washtucna, Lyons Ferry, Hooper, and Potholes State Park.
While we were primarily searching for passerine migrants our two best birds
were both migrating raptors, and the best by far was a sub-adult
BORAD-WINGED HAWK at Lyons Ferry. This bird offered us fabulous views as it
soared overhead approximately 100' above us. The bird offered classic views
of key field marks as it spiraled searching for a thermal. Eventually the
bird found what it was searching for and soared out of sight.
Our other raptor was a very nice Harlan's Red-tail located at Washtucna.
This bird was also in full migration and was soon gone from view.
No other birds of great note were located at any of the locations birded
though a variety of migrating birds were well seen and viewed by all.
We began our day at Washtucna, meeting up with Stephan Schlick and Michael
Fleming who camped at the park the night before. As always, Washtucna
offered a variety of Empids, with Dusky, Gray, Pacific-slope, and Hammond's
seen well by many observers.
A single Dark-eyed Junco of the Slate-colored race was seen at Lyons Ferry
for a very early record . Also a single Golden-crowned Kinglet and several
Vaux's Swifts were seen.
Potholes State Park had a large number of passerines working the tall
Lombardy Poplars making for interesting birding, "Eastern Style". A Red-eyed
Vireo and an AMERICAN REDSTART were picked out of the trees along with many
Yellow-rumped and Townsend's Warblers, and Warbling Vireos. The other nice
birds here were on the beach with a single Black-bellied Plover, 9
Sanderlings, and several Pectoral Sandpipers.
