Dear Tweeters,

Steve and Gail Aslanian found a Buff-breasted
Sandpiper and five species of plover on Saturday at
the Hayton Preserve on Fir Island. Other observers
missed the Buff-breasted on Saturday evening. Sunday
morning (9-11-05) I went out and relocated the
Buff-breasted Sandpiper, along with two or more
Semipalmated Plover and over 40 Killdeer. I missed the
three species of Pluvialis plover, though. Over 120
American Pipits were out there, with at least 8
Lapland Longspurs. These birds were all in the second
dirt field, to the left (east) of the access road. The
Buff-breasted was hard to spot out there. Thanks to
the Aslanians for letting people know about this great
flock!

The hedgerows at Hayton were teeming with sparrows,
including Song, Savannah, Golden-crowned,
White-crowned, and Lincoln's. The White-crowned
juveniles looked like migrants, rather than the local
breeders. They had pink bills and an almost
Tree-Sparrow-like look to them.

Saturday I found a House Wren at DeBay's Slough,
between Mount Vernon and Clear Lake. It was near the
little parking roundabout. That evening up at
Concrete, three interesting birds flew over the HS
football field: a Merlin, a Pileated Woodpecker, and
after darkness) a Common Nighthawk.

Yours truly,
