A all too brief day of birding at Damon Point at Ocean Shores yielded a few
nice birds including a LAPLAND LONGSPUR. I ran into Stefan Schlick and
Michael Fleming who also had a few LAPLAND LONGSPURS as well. I alerted
Stefan and Michael to the presence of 2 golden plovers in the short spartina
at the west end of the pond. One of these birds was an AMERICAN GOLDEN
PLOVER and we suspected that the other probably was also. The second bird
showed quite a bit more gold spangling on its upperwing than I have seen in
American Golden Plovers before. The long primary extension and the short
tertials as well as the prominent supercilium and conspicuous ear covert
spot lead us to the conclusion, however, that the second bird was an
AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER as well. Both birds seemed to be uttering similar
calls but I cannot say we were 100% convinced on this.
