Carol Ledford and I went up to Ridgefield NWR today.
In the Oregon Ash grove, after you drive past the Kiwa
Trail there was a Great Horned Owl that was making a
single ?squawk? call about every 30 seconds or so;
(juvenile calling for a parent?).

>From the SE side of Rest Lake from between the 2
turnouts there, we saw a Least Sandpiper, 2 Pectoral
Sandpipers, and a possible Buff-breasted Sandpiper.
The ?Buff-breasted? was for a short time in the
immediate company of the other three birds, and it was
essentially the same size as the Pectorals but marked
differently. Lighting, drier grasses, and distance
made scoping tough. Scott Murray (who originally
reported the Buff-breasted Sandpiper on 9/11/05) was
also there as was a Washington birder whos name I did
not get. Both of these fellows are familiar with
Pectoral and Buff-breasted Sandpipers. The four of us
left confident that the ?Buff-breasted? was not a
Pectoral. So keep an eye out as the Buff-breasted
Sandpiper may still be there on the Southeast side of
Rest Lake.
