Hi Nancy,

The common method for hand feeding wild birds is to make a
scarecrow-type figure that you seat in a chair in your backyard. Put a
jacket on it and sprinkle birdseed around it and in the brim of the hat
(if you use one.) After a few weeks, you can go out there and don the
jacket and hat yourself. If you sit still, the birds usually will come
to feed because by that time they've become used to the figure wearing
the coat and hat. If you want to make it really easy, you can buy one
of those "Bill Bird in Hand" things that the Birds & Blooms magazine
sells.

I don't feed birds myself so I'll have to be honest and say I haven't
tried any of this. 8-) I do read various birding magazines, though,
and I've read about this method more than once. Good luck!
