White-tailed Kites in the Fall.
A White-tailed Kite field trip is being offered this Sunday by Rainier
Audubon to Tweeters folks. It has not filled up as we hoped. Therefore we
are offering it to up to 4 more Tweeters birders. This trip is being led by
Roger Orness, a White-tailed Hawk expert. He has written about the kites in
WA state. On one day a few years ago he counted 38 separate White-tailed
Kites in WA state on one day.
These beautiful hawks remain quite rare north of Thurston and Pierce
Counties. Roger's route usually includes prairies and wooded hillsides
around Centralia and Chehalis. This is early in the kite-viewing season.

White-tailed Kites are not known to migrate, but the dispersal of the
young and the possibility of late nesting pairs can be found in early
fall. Our trip will take us through several valleys, where kites nested
in the past. Our main target bird will be a fresh plumage juvenile.
Bring: Scopes, binos, snacks and lunch.
Meet: Poodle Dog Restaurant in Fife by 6:45am
and depart promptly at 7 am.
Directions: Take I-5 to exit 137 in Fife. Turn right and drive through the
intersection to the Poodle Dog Restaurant.
Be prepared for a long drive and a long day returning to Fife at 7 pm.
