When a friend emailed me to say he had a Blue Jay at his feeders near
Woodinville a couple of days ago, I assumed he really meant blue Jay (i.e.
Steller's). But lo and behold when I opened up the attachment there was an
actual Blue Jay sitting in the feed tray.

Checking the Matt Bartels/Washington Birder Excel file on the WOS website
(http://www.wos.org/CountyList.htm), I see Blue Jay is listed as 5+ records
in King County (I love this resource). Still, it's not an everyday bird in
this neck of the woods.

Apparently this jay (like the Scrub Jay) is expanding more and more into
Washington. The owners at this particular residence were not too keen on
opening up their backyard to great masses of birders, but perhaps if you
keep a sharp eye out you too may see a Blue Jay (capital "B") flitting about
in the Seattle area in the near future.
