App mile post 18 off I-5, there was a red-shouldered hawk circling. The
pale crescent at the base of the primaries was very visible. I am pretty
sure that area is part of Clark County. (3pm)
Ridgefield S-Unit (between noon and 1:30)
The kite was seen just west of the blind.
The only shorebirds we saw were two greater yellowlegs and a couple of
killdeer. Six great egrets were at Rest Lake. A white breasted nuthatch was
at the trail to the blind. (Noteworthy to me because I used to see them a
lot in that spot, but not for the past year.) A couple of sandhill crane
were calling. There were lots of cars there, so maybe others saw more.
Dike Access Rd
Very slow birding, but we did see quite a few red-tailed hawks munching on
prey in the fields.
I do have a couple of butterfly questions about today. If anyone is
familiar with butterflies in that area at this time of the year and is
willing to answer a few questions, please e-mail me.
Thanks,
Jan Watson
