I just joined tweeters this is my first posting.
I spotted a large bird soaring over the back yard. I thought it was
probably a Red Tailed Hawk. When I got out my binoculars to take a better
look I saw there were 5 of them, riding the thermals. After a couple of
minutes they headed South East and out of sight. In the noon sun I
couldn't see much more than a silhouette. Is that light shining through
the tips of the wing feathers or are they a lighter color? Looking in
Sibley?s I see Turkey Vultures have the right profile and look dark in
the center and light on the edge. My second option would be Golden Eagle.
Being migration time any thing could be passing overhead.
Later in the day I was at Swamp Creek when I saw a bird soaring overhead
. Having studied my Field Guide earlier, this time, I was certain of what
I was seeing. No doubt about it , the lighting was better and I could
clearly see the red head. Turkey Vulture!
I walk my dog at Wallace Swamp Creek Park in Kenmore and always watch the
birds while we are there. I think my total number of species is 60+.
Anyone else in the Kenmore area who birds at Swamp creek I'd love to
share sightings w/ you.
