Subject: [Tweeters] Kinglet ponderings

Linda Phillips noticed a couple of golden crowned kinglets behaving in
almost territorial ways. I too have seen this in the fall and pondered this.
I have also noticed that in the winter kinglets seem to hang out in small
groups of 2-3. I have read that in the northern climates, little birds form
small groups, typically 3 in order to huddle together for warmth at night. I
have wondered if these kinglet cuddle groups are all the same gender, random
individuals, or relatives? If there is some selection factor going on,
perhaps the kinglet arguments we see in the fall are the selection process
for who gets to cuddle in any particular group?
