This is the Lower Columbia Basin Audubon Society Bird Alert for September

name, phone number, date, and sightings after the tone.

If you feed birds, please try to get to our Seed Sale and Bird Fair at
Columbia Grain & Feed on October 8, from 9 am to 2 pm. Lynn and Bob
Tompkins will have live birds there from Blue Mountain Wildlife
Rehabilitation. Come see their Peregrine and our displays. Buying seed or
other bird feeding supplies will make it possible for Columbia Grain & Feed
to make a donation to the LCBAS Education Committee for funding our
programs and the taxidermy collection used in area classrooms.

Mary and Mike Lilga reported a HERMIT THRUSH in their North Richland yard
that was present from September 9 through the 12th. Two TOWNSEND'S
WARBLERS also visited their yard on September 11. Mike Lilga observed a
COMMON NIGHTHAWK and a BURROWING OWL along the Yakima River in the area
between Benton City and Horn Rapids County Park.

From September 15 through at least the 20th, SANDHILL CRANES flew over our
area on their way south. Reports came from Laurie Ness, Margaret Greger,
and Nancy Stansbury.

On September 19, Bob Woodley reported a COMMON TERN at the north end of
Nelson Island in Groves Park in Richland.

An interesting report from people doing surveys for the Corps of Engineers
near Ice Harbor Dam included a possible dark-morph, juvenile LONG-TAILED
JAEGER there on September 19. Promised pictures of the jaeger have not yet
arrived, so verification is pending.

Dale Litzenberger reported several LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, a late BULLOCK'S
ORIOLE, and a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH in his Burbank Heights yard on
September 20. Although the nuthatches are expected in other areas like
North Richland, Dale reports that they are seldom seen in Burbank Heights.

On a trip along the Columbia River near Ringold on September 25, Chris
Simonen found 4 GREAT EGRETS, 2 COMMON MERGANSERS and 2 WESTERN
GREBES. Chris also had a TOWNSEND'S WARBLER visit her North Richland yard
amid a flock of other birds on the 26th.

For only the second time, WESTERN SCRUB-JAYS may be in our area. Chuck
Soderquist and Karen Edwards had 2 in their West Richland yard, near Red
Mountain on September 25. Anyone seeing jays of any kind are encouraged to
report them to this Alert.

To report your own sightings, please give your name, phone number, date,
and sightings after the tone. Thank you.
