I also had a catbird in my backyard in Bothell several years ago. I thought
of towhee for a second (similar shape), but it was almost solid gray, called
once, and even flashed its chestnut rear when it flew away. That was the
only time I've seen one in western WA though.

I thought about that, but, with the caveat that this was many years ago
so my memories aren't perfect, I believe we had Catbirds in addition to
the Towees -- I remember seeing them as well, all grey and black. There
are still lots of Towees there, of course.
